INA-PAC

No one understands nursing and healthcare like nurses. So, don’t allow other healthcare professionals and interested parties decide what is best for YOU and your patients . When Illinois politicians gather to make decisions about nursing and health care, it's imperative they hear from the EXPERTS -- registered nurses.

Why is INA-PAC important?
As a registered nurse, you want your profession to be supported, protected and improved. Nurses must become politically savvy and lobby for legislation that ensures their concerns and problems are addressed. And, with so many people with competing interests clambering to get to the lawmakers, it is imperative that RNs band together through INA-PAC to make sure their voice is heard loud and clear.

How does it work?
Because PACs are able to contribute larger amounts of money than individuals, legislators give these organizations more attention. While this money does not buy votes, it does buy access. Contributors play an important role in the political process, and politicians recognize the ability PACs have to educate them on significant issues.

What are the benefits?
RNs deal with the healthcare crisis on a daily basis . Workplace violence, limited resources, the aging population, the nursing shortage and mandatory overtime are only the tip of the iceberg. In this last year, INA members have successfully lobbied to pass legislation vital to nurses as well as our patients. It has become clear that legislation can make or break a situation. When RNs contribute to INA-PAC, they are supporting candidates who have been endorsed by the PAC because of their stand on issues important to the profession. The support is given regardless of political affiliation, and instead focuses on improving health care.

Who can contribute?
Nurses, nursing students and others interested in improving access to quality, cost-effective health care.

When selecting candidates for endorsement and/or financial support, INA-PAC considers the following:

  • Candidate profile and background
  • Dynamics of political race
  • Leadership position in political party
  • Political potential
  • Leadership position in the Legislature
  • Committee assignments/chairmanships
  • Sponsorship or co-sponsorship of key bills
  • Voting records on issues of concern to nurses
  • Working relationships with nurse constituents
  • Lobbyist recommendations
